Dodie Mitchell is a Winnipeg artist who was born in Vancouver, British Columbia.
She specializes in different media and subject matter. Diversified. Realism and abstract art.
I would like people to see how much time I put into most pieces of my art. I would like them to see the special little touches, like perhaps added pearlescent finish on a particular item in a painting, the details and the use of color. If it’s mixed media, take notice of the texture, the layers of different media and the tiny interesting tidbits that have been glued on. Look close for these details, they are there, in both my realistic and abstract art.
What makes my work different is mainly the diversity of subject matter. Though I do paint in themes so as not to confuse (too much) or overwhelm.
My works are studies of objects, people, animals and landscapes. Before putting brush to canvas I make small pencil sketches.
I rearrange the elements, focusing on shape, contrast, and repetition to strengthen the composition. When I start on the full-sized canvas I use large brushes and big strokes to block in the overall image. Then I add in more detail, revising until I feel the work reflects my original vision.
